The Health Resources and Services Administration works in conjunction with health
care providers and health professions training programs to expand access to quality
health care. The agency seeks to fill in the health care gaps for people who live
outside the economic and medical mainstream. Prior to joining HRSA, Dr. Wakefield
was at the University of North Dakota where she held positions as the associate
dean for rural health at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, a tenured professor
and director of the Center for Rural Health. She has also previously been chief
of staff to two North Dakota senators, and served as director of the Center for
Health Policy, Research and Ethics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Dr.
Wakefield is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and was elected to the
Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies in 2004, serving on the committee
that produced the reports “To Err is Human” and “Crossing the
Quality Chasm”. She has served on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission
and as chair of the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research
and Quality among many other appointments.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is charged with improving the quality,
safety, efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare. AHRQ supports health services
research that will improve the quality of health care and promote evidence-based
decision making. Prior to her appointment as Director of AHRG, Dr. Clancy was Director
of the agency’s Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and, prior
to that, was assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical
College of Virginia.
Dr. Clancy holds an academic appointment at the George Washington University School
of Medicine and serves as Senior Associate Editor for the journal Health Services
Research, as well as serving on the editorial boards of multiple other journals.
She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and was elected a Master of the American
College of Physicians in 2004. In 2009, she was awarded the William B. Graham Prize
for Health Services Research. Dr. Clancy’s research interests include improving
health care quality and patient safety and reducing disparities in care associated
with patients’ race, ethnicity, gender, income and education. As Director
of AHRQ, she launched the first annual report to Congress on health care disparities
and health care quality.
